CNN(原文)
…the demonstrations were not marred by the scale of violence that erupted the previous weekend.
…the rising cost of living, housing crises and lack of funding for education…
BBC(原文)
…the latest protests over the cost of living and poor school conditions…
Marches were initially largely peaceful but became marred by scenes of violence, looting and destruction…
NPR(原文)
It's now morphed into a broader protest over the high cost of living and social inequality.
…the French government put in place a massive security operation with more than 70,000 police.
The Guardian(原文)
…a growing social crisis over schools, as well as the cost of living and public services.
…largely peaceful demonstrations were marred by looting, fires and vandalism of state buildings.
|---|---|---|
| protest | n./v. | mass protests;protest over…;the right to protest |
| demonstration/demonstrator/demonstrate | n./n./v. | largely peaceful demonstrations;street demonstrations;came out to demonstrate |
| cost of living | n. phrase | rising/high cost of living;protest against/over the cost of living |
| clash | n./v. | violent clashes;clashes broke out/erupted;clash with police;clashes between A and B |
| violence | n. | a repeat of last week's violence;the scale of violence |
| demand | n./v. | respond to demands;a response to our demands;demanding better facilities |
| police | n. | riot police;police officers deployed/mobilized |
| security operation | n. phrase | massive/enormous/huge/major security operation(The Guardian 用 security measures) |
- marred by:CNN、BBC、The Guardian
- largely peaceful:CNN、BBC、The Guardian
- looting/loot:CNN、BBC、The Guardian 都用,常和 vandalism、arson、rioting 並列
- curfew:BBC、NPR、The Guardian 都用,常見搭配為 impose curfews、curfews remain in place
- take to the streets/come out:CNN、BBC 用 took to the streets,NPR 和 The Guardian 用 came out
2. 物價與經濟不滿:cost of living、rising fuel prices(BBC)、economic grievances(CNN)、economic inequality 與 social inequality(NPR)、social crisis(The Guardian)。
- CNN:lack of funding for education
- BBC:poor school conditions
- NPR:lack of school funding、better facilities
- The Guardian:teacher absences、repairs to decrepit buildings
5. 「人群上街」:take to the streets、turn out、come out、join。
6. 政府的回應:deploy 與 mobilize/mobilise(調派警力→我增加一下英式寫法)、disperse(驅散人群)、impose restrictions/curfews、ban、crackdown。
第一是 cost of living。
第二是 marred by。
